Review of ‘Little Bite: Vampire Detective’ by Bryan Golden
I have owned a Kindle for some time now and while I have known that you can get certain comics and graphic novels on it I had never bothered doing so, until today. I figured I’d give it a shot and see how it is reading a comic on a Kindle so I purchased an inexpensive graphic novel titled Little Bite: Vampire Detective by Bryan Golden.
Little Bite, which is definitely geared towards children, is about a young vampire named Novi. She is a powerful vampire in the Vampire Kingdom but she lets that power get to her head by bragging and boasting more than she should. When her spirited nature gets her into trouble with the evil Duke Nicolav, she is punished by having her magical bat wings taken away. In order to get them back and be restored to her full power, Novi must solve a series of mysteries for the Vampire Kingdom, each one more dire than the next.
…or so the description says. However, that’s so not what I got when I purchased this graphic novel. It only cost $1.99 so I assumed I wasn’t going to get much, but what I got was far less than expected. It was only 24 pages long with a handful of totally random blank pages thrown in between. The story ended before it had begun and even though it was incredibly cheap I still felt cheated by it. It would have been nice if the length was mentioned in the description, that way readers know they aren't getting a full graphic novel. There is #1 in the title, but how are we to know that it means "Issue 1" or "Book 1?"
Sadly, that wasn’t the only issue I had with Little Bite. The one other big problem was the size of the text, it was near impossible to read certain pages because of how small the text was. I definitely won’t be buying another comic for the Kindle.
Now, in spite of all that negativity, Little Bite itself was not a bad comic. The story has great potential and what little I saw was fantastic. I’m sure the author has an excellent tale for his readers. Also, the artwork was amazing and even looked beautiful in black and white (there is a colored version available for Nook users). My favorite part was definitely the artwork, I loved it.
Overall, I definitely think Little Bite: Vampire Detective has the potential to be fantastic. Sadly, I only got a tiny taste of it. If the author were to publish this graphic novel in paperback format I would totally continue reading it, however if it stays on the Kindle in ebook format only I’ll have to pass.

Exclusive Interview with Stavros
I recently had the joy of interviewing Stavros, a poet, award winning filmmaker and author of the new and highly praised vampire novel Blood Junky. The first in the One Blood series, Blood Junky was created from over 15 years worth of research and development into ancient tomes and folklore from across the globe. Check out the interview and let us know what you think.
Can you tell us about your book Blood Junky?
Blood Junky is a hard-hitting character driven psychological thriller that some of my readers have called “original and fascinating.” The back cover of the book just repeats on a loop, saying, “An intense journey of obsession and love that will leave you breathless,” but its so much more than that.
Linnet Pevensey, the main character, is 235 years old, and she’s feeling every inch of it. Besieged by a wall of painful memories, longing for simpler times, she’s secluded herself from the world as she prepares for a ritualistic trip to New Mexico. Her flatmate, Z, is unpredictable. A century-old vampire whose blood parasite has begun its last cycle, she is enthralled in every possible way to avoid the here and now. And fate is moving them both toward clandestine events of their own making.
Ryan Silva is a good looking, soulful songbird that has never had a problem getting any girl he’s ever wanted until he met Z. But getting the alluring punk’s attention is proving more difficult than he’d ever imagined. Seduced by desires to have Z feed from him, Ryan’s lines of reality blur, locking him on a downward spiral that threatens to destroy, not just his soul, but his very life if he does not stop stalking the vampires.
Dominique De’Paul, the freed blood slave of the ancient race, is unsure if she’ll be able to stop the tides of war and its inevitable genocide. Her Children of Evensong are in peril! The clock is running out! An emissary from the African warrior tribe has been dispatched to discern Mother Night’s threat to the human race, and it looks as if her darling Linnet will be sacrificed to the man’s passions in order to save her precious brood.
The story weaves through the past and present, spanning hundreds of years, and Ryan’s obsession with Z is mirrored through Lin’s obsession with the Vam Pŷr, Dominique De’ Paul. The story also travels the globe from modern day Los Angeles to the bygone eras of London, Tangiers, Africa, and the exotic lands of São Paulo, Brazil; flawlessly incorporating historically accurate places, people, and events with meticulous detail and lyrical fiction.
How does Blood Junky differ from other novels about vampires?
Though every book attempts to craft a plausible world from which to tell its tale, I actually spent 15 years researching and developing my condition of vampirism to make it as real and as plausible as possible in our world with our laws of physics and history. My vampires are not mythical or metaphysical or magical as in most cases. They are biological in design. I think this is one of the main reasons why my readers have taken to it so passionately.
When I was writing it I also paid a lot of attention on how it was written. I wanted people to not only be moved by the story and the characters, but by the prose and its rhythm and flow. I wanted to give people a complete experience that they would remember. And I think to some degree I have done that.
I was at HorrorFind, in Gettyburg, PA, a few weeks ago and I saw this group of people walk over to the book, so I wandered over to, you know, do my thing, make my pitch, and I saw this woman caressing the book against her face and telling the people that she was with how much she loved the novel. I was floored. I’d never seen anything like it, nor did I ever imagine something like that ever happening. But I keep meeting people at these shows who tell me how much they love the book and how they’ve read it two or three times. And I’m literally flabbergasted.
It freaks me out a little, which is cool and all, but it tells me that I’m doing something right. So, whatever that “something” is…that’s what makes Blood Junky different.
What inspired you to write about vampires?
This whole thing with the One Blood series, of which Blood Junky is merely the first book, came to me in a dream back in ’95. I was studying Impressionist painting and was a musician in a band and the farthest thing in my universe was vampires. I mean, they were cool and all, but my writing aspirations were knitted up in song lyrics, poetry, and family dramas. The dream took me by surprise and gave me the spark that began a fifteen year long journey of discovery. I kinda feel like I was given these stories to tell more so than I’m attempting to tell them.
I’ve always been a big fan of horror. I love Bela Lugosi and grew up watching Christopher Lee in all those wonderful Hammer Films. I read Dracula when I was studying the little group that Lord Byron and Shelley were a part of. And I enjoyed Rice’s Vampire Chronicles and the early works of vampire erotica, like Poppy Z Brite. But I never had any inclination to travel down that path as a writer. If anything, I wanted to tell some werewolf stories because I could get into the primal savagery.
But life is what happens when you are making plans. That dream knocked me on my rear.
What is one thing you would like people to take away from their experience of reading Blood Junky?
A desire to keep reading the story. Isn’t that what any author really wants? I mean, if I’m going to be honest here, I have to come clean. I’ve got an ever widening epic growing through my shoulders. My fingers are a forest of words; my mind an ocean of fire – and I want to keep writing. I want to keep telling stories that are better than the ones that I’ve told. So yeah…I want Junkies.
Given the current vampire craze, people feel especially attracted to vampires, why do you think that is?
Ultimately, I think it was time. The vampire has had a hold on us since the dawn of time. There have been more film and TV representations of Dracula than there have been of Jesus Christ. It’s true. You can look it up. Combine that interest and desire for vampires with a country suffering an economic crisis while engaged in a foreign war than you’ve pretty much given people a desire to escape into fantasy. Vampires are sexy and powerful and can have whatever they want, whenever they want it. While we are continually made to struggle and toil. The vampire is our social Id running rampant.
Who’s your favorite fictitious vampire (other than your own)?
Lestat. He is so complex and misunderstood. Sexy and malevolent. He was in a rock band and appears to have the luck of the Irish. I mean…he woke the passions of a Goddess. Ya gotta admire that!
What is your favorite vampire book, movie and/or show?
I guess in a way I love the classics: Bram Stoker/Anne Rice – Bela in black & white. Christopher Lee with the cheesy red-dye blood. I used to watch Dark Shadows as a kid and was a huge fan of Barnebus Collins – original that is, not the failed remake.
Tell our readers why they should check out your book - in 3 words: (bwahaha)
Awesome. Original. Fun. ; ]
And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
Well, yes. I just released my second book, Dead Girl: A Romantic Zombie Tale of Revenge, and Blood Junky’s sequel, Love in Vein, is set for release at the end of the month. I’m working on a vampire video short featuring my character Z with actresses Melanie Robel and Carol Anne Watts, as well as, some vampire photo shoots. I do have two vamp film scripts that I’m shopping around, so light a black candle for them!
I also have more horror conventions lined up with fang-maker, RJ – The Fang Guy, and I have a blog called Bite Me Really Hard, where people can learn more about my books and photography, film scripts, and generally hang out and download cool stuff.

True Blood Actors Chat About Their Character’s Deaths
As every True Blood fan can confirm, Season 4 was big, bloody and packed full of character deaths. We lost loads of beloved characters this season, and a few not-so-beloved characters. Some deaths made it very clear that that character won’t be coming back, others left us wondering if they are really truly dead. The death toll has not only fans talking, but also the actors themselves. Check out what the actors had to say about their character being killed off:
Rutina Wesley (Tara): "I don't know what they have in store for next season. I haven't seen any scripts, so I have no idea what's going to happen. I'm either at death's door, or I'm gone. That's scary for an actor, but if my time has come, then my time has come — and what a way to go, saving your best friend's life. It's pretty cool that everyone's going to be going, 'Is she, or isn't she?' I'm excited and terrified all at the same time. I could be a ghost, I could die — it's in the hands of our wonderful writers and the creative mind of Alan Ball."
Brit Morgan (Debbie): "Joe and I were really curious after our first episode back this season, so we both went up to Alan and said, 'Can you give us any more information?' And he told me right off the bat how it would happen in the kitchen, just like in the books, and how Debbie just couldn't handle Alcide's feelings for Sookie. It's always heartbreaking to leave a show, but I've known since day one that his character was meant to go out this way. She's such a classic flameout."
Jessica Tuck (Nan): "I was supposed to be in the first couple episodes, and I last for four years — so I am forever grateful for the time I've had on the show. Plus, the one good thing about being shown the True Death is that when you squirt with blood, you're not the one who gets covered with it — it's everyone that's in your way. Stephen Moyer drove a stake through my heart, but I then got him back by just covering him in gooey blood."
Kevin Alejandro (Jesus): "They were really cool about it, like 'This is nothing you did. Happy relationships are just boring.'"
Pretty cool how professional they all are about having their characters knocked off. They seem much calmer about it than me (I was pretty upset when they killed Jesus off). But from the sounds of it, Tara just might be coming back. While her character tends to annoy me, I don’t want her to die just yet. I think Sookie has lost enough and dealt with enough that the writers need to back off her just a tiny bit. A character can only handle so much and when you kill off every single person in their life it just stops being entertaining or believable.
What did you guys think of the deaths this season? Any of them make you really happy or super depressed?

Play as a Vampire in the Upcoming Elder Scrolls V
Vampires are coming back to the Elder Scrolls RPG series! Players will once again have the option to turn into a vampire in the upcoming game Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which is due on November 11th on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
According to game director Todd Howard, while playing Skyrim you'll encounter bloodthirsty vampires and can get infected by one of them. If left untreated, the disease will turn you into a creature of the night. Or you can decide to treat the affliction to stay a regular mortal.
Howard briefly mentioned in his interview with G4 that there are multiple levels of being a vampire. He didn’t elaborate much, but it’s possible that it will be similar to past game, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. In Oblivion there are four stages of vampirism. At the first stage, NPC's wouldn't notice you're a vampire and you didn’t take on damage from the sun. Unfortunately, at this stage you get only a slight ability boosts. For each day you go without feeding on a victim’s blood, you'll proceed to the next level of vampirism. Your ability bonuses will improve and you'll get unique powers but you'll also become more dead-like in appearance. By the fourth stage, you’re more powerful and most NPC's will refuse to speak to you. It’s possible that Skyrim's vampirism will be like this, but until the game’s release we can’t know for sure.
Here’s some more info on the upcoming game:
“The Empire of Tamriel is on the edge. The High King of Skyrim has been murdered. Alliances form as claims to the throne are made. In the midst of this conflict, a far more dangerous, ancient evil is awakened. Dragons, long lost to the passages of the Elder Scrolls, have returned to Tamriel. The future of Skyrim, even the Empire itself, hangs in the balance as they wait for the prophesized Dragonborn to come; a hero born with the power of The Voice, and the only one who can stand amongst the dragons.”
- Skyrim reimagines the open-world fantasy epic, pushing the game play and technology of a virtual world to new heights
- Play any type of character you can imagine, and do whatever you want; the legendary freedom of choice, storytelling
- Skyrim's new game engine brings to life a complete virtual world with rolling clouds, rugged mountains and ancient dungeons
- Choose from hundreds of weapons, spells, and abilities; the new character system allows you to play any way you want
Here’s the G4 interview with Howard and the big vampire reveal:

What do you guys think? Have you played the Elder Scrolls games? If not, will you now that you know there are vampires in it?

True Blood Season Finale – And When I Die
True Blood - Season 4 Finale - And When I Die
Wow. Just, wow. Most of this finale was just wrapping things up; the whole sequence with Marnie and Lafayette and Jesus didn't actually last that long. Once that was over, at about the halfway mark, they got busy establishing peeks into the new subplots and such that are going to be popping up in season 5. And even though those were great, there was an entire 15 minutes or so in there that was pretty much plain old filler. Check out the finale's recap.
- Maxine's heart to heart with Sam; they were overdue for showing some sort of sincerity to Maxine Fortenberry.
- That Jason finally told Hoyt that he's been screwing Jessica. It was the right thing to do, as he told Jessica later, although Jessica has serious issues with morality, what with being a giant redneck vampire Jezebel and all.
- I like that Hoyt didn't just get pushed around. Jason had that ass kickin' coming, even though he was just trying to do what he thought was best the whole time.
- How cool were Arlene and Terry's Halloween costumes? I loved the zombie couple!
- Kevin Alejandro's dramatic last hour in the role of Jesus Velasquez. He's a superb actor, and I hope to see him in more than just a short moment as an extra in Red State in the future.
- Holly's moment as a pot smoking purple/pink fairy, when she's talking about Halloween.
- Getting to see everybody popping up out of their graves was pretty cool, and we loved getting a last moment with Adele Stackhouse.
- That includes Rene Lenier/Drew Marshall, he's still a devious shithead, but it was still nice to see him again, fake accent and all.
- Ginger and Pam; Pam definitely needed a hug, and who better than sweet, clueless, Ginger to administer one. It was a super cute moment.
- Holly and Andy; he needs a girlfriend, and it's nice to see that he's straight again. Hugs all around, people!
- The re-appearance of Steve Newlin, holy crap, he's a vampire! And he's looking at Jason's junk like... er... he wants to eat it. I wonder in what sense?
- The "gay storm troopers" line, and Eric and Bill's dispatch of Nan Flanagan & Co.. It was great. Especially Bill's victory line, "WE ARE NOT FUCKING PUPPY DOGS!" and Eric's "What a bitch." The whole scene left nothing to be desired.
- The 15 to 20 minutes in this episode, after the whole Marnie thing, when pretty much nothing was going on. Just character round-up; everyone getting their relationship statuses established, and a few seconds of putting them in danger in order for season 5 to make a strong comeback.
- Jesus dying. He was far from my favorite character, but I'll miss him.
- The fact that Marnie doesn't end up going to Hell or even experiencing some form of afterlife justice. I mean, she killed how many innocent people? And she's escorted into death by Gramma and Antonia? Apparently, even the afterlife is unfair.
- I like Jessica less and less as the show progresses. Hoyt and Jason have gone through Hell for her, and she just treats them like disposable douches. Insert in pussy, and discard after use.
- How no one seems to be able to agree on how to pronounce "Samhain", and just Wiccans in general. I hope they're gone for a while.
- Alcide's big gushy moment with Sookie. Man up, dude. You -just- abjured Debbie the other night.
- Jason, being turned into Jessica's bitch. He's already been gang-raped by rednecks this season, now he's some slut vampire's boytoy? Jason isn't having a good year.
- Sookie's decision to be single; I get it, it makes sense, but I don't have to like it.
- Debbie getting blown away. She was doing so well. All over Alcide, and I'm sorry, but sure, Debbie was jealous, but Alcide knew that obsessing over Sookie was wrong, and he's partially at fault too for the whole mess.
- I really doubt Tara's going to be full-on dead next season. They really love punishing us with her character. You know how, at the end of Hook, Captain Hook says, "What would the world be like, without Captain Hook?" It's like that. Even though, the giant crocodile clock falls on him.
- There'll be a Terry-centric subplot, as indicated by the introduction of this shady new character from his past.
- Reverend Steve Newlin 2.0 is going to be causing problems for Jason.
- Pam and Sookie might find themselves at odds with each other.
- Bill and Eric are going to have to unite despite some competition for Sookie, in order to save mutual asses from the Authority, and from a fresh from the concrete parking garage, Russell Edgington.
- Lafayette will probably spend the next season coming to terms with his new power; as a medium, and having a Mexican demon in him.
- Sam's going to get eaten by a werewolf! Just kidding. I do think he'll have serious were-drama on his hands though.
- It may be the last season, since the 5th book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries book series is notoriously known as one of the most boring. They're going to have to amp the 5th season up if they're going to make the show last. My guess is, they'll probably do this with more fairy bullshit. Gag.
