NetFlix to stream ‘The Hunger Games’ online 90 days after EPIX’s TV premiere of the movie

Like we told you previously, EPIX has obtained the exclusive rights to premiere The Hunger Games on TV, as well as ABC getting the TV rights of the movie.

Now, Home Media Magazine says that the movie will be available online only 90 days after it has premiered:

Netflix gets streaming access to the year’s biggest box office hits, The Hunger Games and The Avengers, beginning in early 2013 — but only 90 days after their releases on disc and Epix, reps for Netflix and the multiplatform pay-channel confirmed.

The Hunger Games is distributed domestically by Lionsgate and The Avengers by Paramount Pictures, with Paramount securing the rights to Avengers from Marvel Comics before The Walt Disney Co. acquired the superhero company. Lionsgate and Paramount parent Viacom are co-owners (along with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) of Epix.

No home entertainment release dates for the titles have been announced.

As is also noted, no absolute date for DVD has been fixed yet.

‘Scary Movie’ writers on board to parody The Hunger Games in new spoof movie

‘Scary Movie’ writers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer have come together once again for a new parody, The Starving Games, the central point of which is of course The Hunger Games:

Though “The Hunger Games” will be front and center for many of the jokes, other pics to be pilloried include “The Avengers,” “Sherlock Holmes” and the finale of the “Harry Potter” franchise. Wild Bunch has already snapped up the German rights, and Falcon has taken the Middle East.

Friedberg and Seltzer, both repped by Safran, have made a living making fun of other people’s work starting with “Scary Movie,” for which Friedberg and Seltzer served as writers and Safran was an exec producer.

EPIX obtains rights to premier The Hunger Games on TV

We previously informed you that ABC had picked up The Hunger Games TV rights. Now EPIX has announced that they will air the movie exclusively for the first time on TV:

NEW YORK — EPIX, the multiplatform premium entertainment service, is proud to announce the addition of two of 2012’s premier box office hits, Marvel Studio’s and Paramount’s The Avengers and Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games to its growing library of great films. [UPDATED] Lionsgate gains approval to release The Hunger Games in China

The Hunger Games is definitely setting new benchmarks. Lionsgate has finally won approval to release the movie in China, making the cut among the 20 foreign films okayed each year by Chinese authorities for cinematic viewing. The deal was first reported on last November.

Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer said on May 2, ““We got approved to be in China in cinema and that’s a big move for that movie,” not delving into anymore details, or even a set release date yet.

The year’s biggest film to date has collected $603.5 million in worldwide sales without China, which follows North America and Japan in box-office receipts.

[UPDATE] The China Film Group is teaming up with Talent International to release the film in the first half of June.

Thanks to revenue-sharing guidelines put in place earlier this year, Western distributors can pull in up to a quarter of the receipts from Chinese sales, making “The Hunger Games” one of the first big Hollywood exports to reap the rewards of the new international rule change. [Source]

Possible re-write of The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, by Michael Arndt

According to THR, Michael Arndt, who won an Oscar for Little Miss Sunshine and also worked on Toy Story 3 and Phineas and Ferb movie that will come out in 2013 as well is reportedly in talks to polish the Catching Fire script that was drafted by Slumdog Millionaire‘s Simon Beaufoy.

Francis Lawrence is officially on board to direct the movie, stepping into the chair vacated by Gary Ross, who helmed the $600 million-grossing first installment in the franchise.

The sequel is barreling toward a late-summer production start. While Lionsgate doesn’t yet have a deal with Arndt, if he signs on, he will have to work double-time to get the script ready due to a squeezed schedule caused by star Jennifer Lawrence’s commitment to Fox’s X-Men: First Class sequel. That tight schedule was one reason Ross declined to take on the project.

Francis Lawrence’s Note to ‘Hunger Games’ Fans

Francis Lawrence has finally officially signed on to direct Catching Fire. The announcement was made by Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group Co-Chairmen Patrick Wachsberger and Rob Friedman.

Lawrence, who is represented by CAA and 3 Arts Entertainment, has experience directing films that make him uniquely suited to handle the blend of character driven drama and high stakes action of CATCHING FIRE; among them are I AM LEGEND, CONSTANTINE, and WATER FOR ELEPHANTS.

“Lionsgate, the cast, and filmmakers are all thrilled to have Francis Lawrence come on board as director of Catching Fire.  Suzanne’s brilliant book is the intense story of the birth of the rebellion and Katniss’ emotionally charged journey as she takes on the mantle of the Mockingjay, and we all think Francis is the perfect director to bring the story to life,” said Erik Feig, Lionsgate’s President Of Production.

“From the very beginning of this brilliant trilogy’s journey from page to screen, our first priority has been to stay true to the heart and soul of Suzanne Collins’ powerful stories. From my first conversation with Francis, I knew he would make a great partner for both me and Suzanne.   His passion for Catching Fire and inspired ideas for a faithful adaptation make him the perfect director for this movie.  I know this will be a wonderful collaboration and I cannot wait to get started,” echoed producer Nina Jacobson.

The Hunger Games Facebook page posted a special note from Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence:

“Hello fellow Hunger Games fans!  I just want you all to know how unbelievably excited and honored I am to be a part of Catching Fire.  At the end of the day, all of the work that I put in to my movies is for you — the fans. Make sure to post and let me know what you’re most excited to see in this adaptation as we aim to make something truly faithful and spectacular!” – Francis Lawrence

He sounds like he is very excited for the movie and really cares about what the fans want to see!
